Welcome back to TFR on today’s special segment, we ask guests to share the best question they’ve ever been asked by an allocator. Here’s the segment called Best LP question.

On today’s special segment, we have Laura Cho of Canaan, Laura, what’s the best question an LP has asked you?
0:43
Oh, this is a good question. Why do you like your partners? I actually, I loved that because it kind of got to the core of, you know, why do you show up every day? You know, you know you have all of the investing that you’re doing and delivering results for your LPs. But why should I take a bet on this partnership over any other so much of it still is, you know, the way that we operate as a firm, right? We can get into all of the details around how we evaluate investments, how we source, how we support them, but you’re also betting on a firm to be able to weather all of these storms, and Canaan as a fund that’s been around for almost 40 years, we’ve really focused on that generational transition. We focused on building a cohesive team. And that question of you know, why do you like each other? I think, becomes easy to talk about and highlight, the way in

which we work together. How many folks are in the partnership at Canaan? So it’s across
1:44
the investment team. We have about 2425 people, and we’re split up across East Coast, West Coast, and again, has been that way since the beginning. So making sure that we find the time to be able to get together in person, keep those lines of communication really open. Find ways to collaborate across deals. It takes intentionality perfect.

On today’s special segment, we have Ted Clark and John turbell of four bridge partners, Ted and John, what is the best question an LP has asked you,
2:21
I think are probably the best questions LPS can ask. Are obviously people focused, in our opinion, and as LPS ourselves, you know, we’re hyper focused on the people piece. So I think, you know, for like, best question that we’ve been asked, I think it’s sort of, why are you doing this together? Why are you guys doing this? And, you know, I think it speaks a lot to motivation and alignment, etc. So, you know, why are you two, you know, odd birds doing this together? I think was probably the best moment, yeah. Why

does the world need another fund of funds? Sure, and we believe wholeheartedly that they do. So, you

on today’s special segment, we have Matthias Schilling of headline, Matthias, what is the best question an LP has asked you, how
3:09
do you build culture? What’s your answer? Well, as I said, you know, I mean, my my personal way to build culture. I mean, I think, you know, fundamentally, a lot of people believe that, you know, in order to get best outcomes. You have to drive by fear. Imagine organization by fear, and then, you know, people have to fight, and then you get the right outcome. I think, I think, to be honest, it’s the opposite. I want to create, called trust for people, and create a magic where it’s this, you know, this, this drive for intellectual curiosity drives the discussion, but it’s always, you know, 100% intellectually honest. And you know, we create a team environment where everybody, you know, we have this, this core trust, where everybody can can get to his own best, right? And then we can, in a complimentary way, drive the best decisions
